Welcome to Australia’s best seafood business for 2010.
Seafood Business of the Year
The title of Australia’s best seafood business was awarded to She Sells Seafood at the 5th annual Seafood Industry Awards held in Melbourne on 15 April 2010. Our business was recognised for our excellence in product and quality, our innovation in marketing and community links, and our business growth. This follows our success in winning the same category in the Victorian seafood awards in September 2009.
This award is a wonderful reflection on the contribution from our major suppliers and from our fantastic staff, both past and present. It is also testament to the growing group of loyal customers who have encouraged and supported us over the past six years. We look forward to working with you all on delivering great fresh seafood as we gear up for the coming spring/summer.
Winning the Seafood Business of the Year Award from a base in central Victoria also puts to rest the myth that good quality, fresh seafood can only be obtained from coastal locations. In fact our proximity to the Melbourne Wholesale Fish market gives us, and our customers, access to the best of Victoria’s marine harvest. Through the Fish Market we are also able to source the premium range of seafood from elsewhere in Australia, such as Wild Barramundi from the Top End, Goldband Snapper from WA, Spanish Mackerel from Queensland, King prawns from the Sunshine Coast, Tasmanian scallops and Coffin Bay oysters.
In effect, our customers are able to enjoy the same quality and freshness as you would find at the leading retailers and restaurants in Melbourne.
Seasonal Highlights
The cooler months of winter are typically times of lower demand for fresh seafood ... but are peak periods in terms of availability and condition for a wide range of fish and shellfish. Right now the Tasmanian scallop harvest is in full swing. Each week we are able to supply fresh, un-soaked scallops that are full of flavour (not water).
Pacific oysters are also in peak condition at this time of the year ... and our customers are all commenting on the plumpness and flavour of our Coffin Bay oysters.
Amongst the fish species, Blue Grenadier, Rockling, Monkfish and Dory are all in great condition at the moment. After some problems with water temperatures earlier in the year the Atlantic Salmon from Tasmania have now put on good body weight and flesh condition. They have been joined in out fish cabinet by King (Chinook) Salmon from the crystal clear waters of the Marlborough Sounds in New Zealand; this species of salmon is even higher in the valuable Omega 3 fatty acids.
Sushi Workshops
Reflecting the growing demand for our fresh seafood sushi (made daily from Wednesday to Saturday) we are now offering monthly Sushi Workshops to show participants some of the tips and techniques to make great looking (and tasting) sushi at home. Comments received from our workshops to date include “so much fun and such good value”, “two hours of real value and delight”, “allowed us to be creative to our heart’s content”.
Each workshop is limited to four participants and includes hands-on tuition, course notes, a starting kit of authentic ingredients ... and plenty of tasting samples. All the details are listed under Sushi Supplies or are available in-store.
The next workshop is scheduled for Monday 13 September - and there are only 2 spots remaining!
Training Award
Our school-based apprentice from 2008/09, Hayley White, was recently announced as the winner of an Australian Vocational Student Prize for 2009. This award reflects the high standard of Hayley’s work with us, and augurs well for her future in the hospitality industry. Best wishes to Hayley for her studies at Victoria University ... and on deciding how to invest her prize winnings! Fish Quote of the Week "Our fishermen still follow tide honoured traditions"
